Priel, 36 year-old, about to be married
What did you want to be when you were a child?
When I was in my mother's womb, the doctors told her to abort me; that I wasn't developing properly. She wouldn't do it. When I was born, my father called me Pri-El (the fruit of God); he had chosen a Hebrew name for me. He had no idea that I would spend my entire childhood with Jews. I was a sick child; chronic pneumonia. I spent years lying in hospital beds. There I've met many other children, mostly Jewish. I'd embrace their dreams. Someone told me he wants to be a pilot, I said the same. Another girl said she wants to be a doctor, I said the same. I never had one thing that I wanted, except being free. It was clear to me that I will not be put in a cage; I'll never be bound to another.
What would you like to do today?
My starting point was a good loving one-bedroom home, where the ten of us would sleep on mattresses laid on the floor. Then, I went to the hospital where I learned things no one else in the village knew. I studied computers, language; the world. It made me different. Today I'm in charge of housekeeping at a very big hotel in Tel Aviv. I'm responsible for the maintenance of the entire hotel, directly managing 50 employees.
I'm getting married real soon, preparations are in full motion. The guy is 13 years younger than me. He understands that I am who I am, and that he is who he is. I don't belong to him. I've already been married once. He wouldn't let me go out with my friends. Two months later I left him. I have a good guy now.
What is your dream?
I want to be a mother, even though I'm scared. I don't even know how to bathe a baby… but, my guy told me it'll be okay; his mother will come and stay with us when the time comes. I have another dream, a big one; I want to open a shop, where I could sell my macramé and micro-macramé works that I make. It'll be in Tira, the town we're moving to, and many people will come there from everywhere – Jews, Arabs, Druze, Christians. I found peace in the craft. It liberates me and I love it very much. I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night to work.
